Burnout in Boards

EY tells us that boards may be burning out

Concerns have emerged regarding the efficacy of current board structures, as highlighted by recent insights from Ernst & Young. A study involving approximately 20 non-executive directors has revealed that conventional governance frameworks may be ill-equipped to navigate today's volatile business landscape.
The increasing demands from investors have intensified workloads, and the necessity for engagement has surged. Consequently, several non-executive members have expressed difficulty in identifying which non-financial factors drive organisational performance.
Notably, around 30 per cent of non-executive directors consider traditional, centralised boards to be inadequately positioned to discern, interpret, and respond to rapidly evolving trends and events. Moreover, a significant 41 per cent of boards rarely discuss artificial intelligence, a surprising oversight given its prominence in contemporary discourse.
Geanne Buillet the assurance lead ay EY indicates those questioned by researchers have reported feeling overwhelmed by their responsibilities, undermining their ability to maintain effective oversight and strategic foresight for their organisations. Indeed, the current governance model appears to be under considerable strain, raising critical questions about its sustainability amidst the complexities of today's business environment.
